Leadership Lessons from Corporate to Campsite

Dave Munn, ABM for Good volunteer and board member, shared how his experience as CEO at ITSMA for more than 20 years transfers to his role on the management committee at Three Mile Island Camp, an Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) property on Lake Winnepesaukee in New Hampshire.

Dave’s skills in leading ITSMA – a small firm focusing on research, events, and consulting with some of the largest technology and services organizations across the globe – may seem like it’s a world away from AMC.

However, Dave believes that the most important aspect of leadership in any organization is working with people.

At AMC, much like it was at ITSMA, Dave’s top priority is to hire great people.

That’s just the start, Dave emphasizes. The next step is to connect with individuals across the entire organization to ensure everyone is working to accomplish what they set out to do personally, while also working collectively toward the organization’s goals.

Dave has approached leadership in both corporate and nonprofit roles by balancing forth short- and long-term goals. He notes that good results don’t typically happen overnight.

“But,” he warns, “that can’t stop the forward momentum. You have to continue to try new things, invest in new initiatives, and get new people involved.”

Whether at ITSMA, AMC, or, now, ABM for Good, Dave values “the opportunity to continue to work with really smart and dedicated people.”
